Was the Super Bowl Half-Time Show Too Risque?

HARD ROCK STADIUM, FLORIDA – On Sunday at 8:20p.m the Super Bowl halftime show began.  By 9:00 parents were already tweeting their complaints about the “inappropriate dancing” and “revealing clothing.”  At the same time, other people were raving about the show, saying it was one of the best in Super Bowl history.

The question needs to be asked: who is right?  On one hand the Super Bowl is supposed to be a family show and the dancing could be constituted as inappropriate for young children.  On the other hand, it’s not much different than we’ve seen in the past.

One man is even threatening to sue the NFL because the halftime show put him “in danger of Hell Fire.”  He believes that $867 trillion should be compensation enough for having to endure the “crotch shots.”

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but the general consensus seems to be that these people are making a big deal out of nothing.  Yes, it might not have been a PG show, but it could have been much worse.

In fact parents should not have been surprised by the dancing considering that both Shakira and J-Lo were the ones performing.  Shakira has an entire song titled “Hips Don’t Lie,” for goodness sake and the show’s producers assumed that most people would know that J-Lo doesn’t wear the most conservative clothing.

In terms of the clothing, we’ve seen it all before at other halftime shows, so there shouldn’t be such a big controversy.  Just look at Beyonce and Lady Gaga. They both wore leotard-type outfits and yes some people complained about those too, but people like to complain about everything.

The only other issue that parents were complaining about was J-Lo’s pole dance.  While I agree that this wasn’t necessary for the show, I also understand why she did it.  Earlier this year she was in a movie called Hustlers, which was about excotic dancers.

In an interview J-Lo explained that pole dancing was one of the hardest skills she had ever learned.  It makes sense that she would want to show off her hard work in front of America.

The overall opinion is that this show wasn’t as risque as people are making it seem and that it will go down in history as one of the best halftime shows.
