RIVER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL- The Laker boys varsity basketball won their first district championship since 2005 with a victory over the Titans of Michigan Lutheran.

The Lakers had a quick turnaround after a tough game against Dream Academy on Wednesday, but senior Tanner Nutting knew that ML could not be taken for granted.

¨We knew Dream was a big win, but we knew we had to respect ML because we played them twice and anything can happen in the tournament.¨

The starting lineup for the Lakers were seniors Corey Seger, Connor Christensen, Tommy Koenig, Zach Rogers, and Tanner Nutting.

The Lakers started off the game on fire with Seger hitting six three pointers out of nine attempts in the first half, giving him 18 points at halftime.  Nutting said that Seger gave the team momentum on both ends for the rest of the game.

¨Corey started out hot and we fed off of it on both ends, we were able to take advantage because they had to guard him tightly and everyone else contributed.¨

The hot start led the Lakers to a 26-12 halftime lead and the second half brought more of the same.  With Seger being double-teamed Koenig was able to score and ended with 15 points of his own. The backups were able to play for most of the fourth quarter with the Lakers up big and the team cruised to a 62-40 win.  This was the third time this year that the Lakers defeated the Titans by more than 20 points.

The Lakers never trailed, won the rebounding battle 24-22, and the turnover battle by forcing 19 Titan turnovers.  Seger led the scoring with 18, Koenig added 15, and Christensen finished with 14 points for the Lakers.

Nutting couldn’t have been happier to be a district champion in his senior season.

¨It means everything that we could accomplish it; this was a big deal.  We were so close last year and we finally got it done. Now it’s time to go win regional(s).¨

The Lakers move on to the Regional Semifinals at Harper Creek High School on Monday, March 12 at 7:00 pm.  The Lakers will be taking on the Broncos from Bellevue.
