MICHIGAN LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL- Friday, December 15, 2017, the Lake Michigan Catholic Varsity team took on their arch rivals, Michigan Lutheran.  The Lakers dominated and rolled to an easy 66-39 victory over the Titans.

The Lakers starting lineup consisted of five seniors:  Corey Seger, Connor Christensen, Tommy Koenig, Tanner Nutting, and BJ Jones.  Seger led the team in scoring with 22 points, with Koenig adding another 14 for the Lakers.

One thing that stood out from the Lakers’ play last night was their spectacular defense and it was noticed on the first play of the game as Christensen picked off a pass and layed it in for an easy early bucket.  More of the same followed as the Lakers were up 25-10 at the end of the first quarter.

One of the reasons for this great defense was junior Christian Monconduit, who had a bunch of steals to go along with 5 points.  He was all over the court, making the ball handlers very uncomfortable all night long.

“We created a lot of turnovers which made for easier baskets for us and we kept them out of running their offense and controlling the tempo, which was huge.  Anyone watching could see they couldn’t make an outside shot, so rebounding was big and we won that battle too.”

He would go on to say that the team has been stressing defense in practice.

“We know defense can help us win games more than offense and if we play hard defense, it will make lives easier on the offensive side of the ball.”

The second quarter was just as dominant, as Catholic outscored Lutheran 21-9 and were up 46-19 at the half and by then the game was already over.

Catholic was able to play the bench guys for most of the second half and they were able to easily hold off any of the Titans’ last efforts.

The Lakers outshot the Titans from deep making eight shots compared to none, outrebounded Lutheran 27-14, and had twelve more assists.  They defeated the Titans in every major category and it showed on the scoreboard.

This was truly an impressive performance for the varsity team as they improved their record to 4-0 (3-0 BCS White).  Michigan Lutheran dropped to 0-3 (0-2 BCS White).

The Lakers will take their undefeated record to Benton Harbor High School on Tuesday, December 19 when they take on the Dream Academy at 7:00 pm.
