LAKE MICHIGAN CATHOLIC – On Monday, May 8th, the LMC varsity softball team competed against Benton Harbor. With a great defense, offense, and pitching, the Lakers were able to pull out a win in both headings.

The game started with a dramatic change in the line up. Many girls who may not get to play often were put in.

Sophomore Anika Gaska pitched almost all of both games and did an incredible job. Also, the outfield positions changed often.

It was a smooth game all day. In the first header, the Lakers were able to score multiple hits within the first few innings and defense was able to keep the opposing team from getting any runs.

By the end of the third inning, they were up fifteen points and mercied Benton Harbor. The good luck continued for the lakers as they headed out for the second header.

Though the second header started out a little slowly, it picked up quickly by the fourth inning. The Lakers were ahead 8-0 by the end of the fourth inning and only needed four more runs in order to mercy Benton Harbor once again.

Though it wasn easy, the Lakers worked hard and got the final hits they needed. They ended the game with a final score of 14-0 just as the fifth inning had begun.

Gaska says that she is very happy that they won the game and excited that she got to pitch so often.

¨I thought that playing such an inexperienced team was a great way to move people around unto positions that they normally wouldn’t play. It was a great way to make the game fun.¨

Coach, Joe Herzog agreed. He thought the game went very well and he is impressed by the improvement of some of the players.

¨LMC softball beat Benton Harbor 15-0 and 14-0 in two games shortened by the mercy rule. In game one Anika Gaska pitched a perfect game for the second year in a row against Benton Harbor. Anika also picked up the win in the second game.  Everyone on the team scored at least one run on the day and Anika helped her own cause by going 4 for 4 at the plate smacking 4 doubles and taking 3 walks.

Make sure to come out and support the team at their next games!
