LAWRENCE, MICHIGAN – On Thursday, March 23rd, the varsity boys’ baseball team won 5-1 against the Lawrence Tigers, in their first game of the season. Most of the game the score was tied 1-1 until the last inning when the Lakers scored 4 runs.

Jack Howard, junior, pitched the first 4 innings (7 total) for the Lakers, shutting out Lawrence. Kyle Juza, junior, came in next and allowed only one run, which was all the Tigers would get.

The Lakers were able to score 1one run early, but then didn’t score again until the 7th inning, when they scored 4 more runs.

The win was a good way to start the season, especially since they have high hopes for the rest of it. Last year, the Lakers lost in the regional semifinals in a close game.

They have come back this year with a very similar team, having lost only two seniors. They started the season ranked 10th in the state and hope to live up to these high expectations.

Ending last year ranked 5th and now pre-ranked 10th it motivates other teams to really want to beat you,” says Head Coach Dale Beeney. “Everybody wants to beat a ranked team.”

Also, Coach Beeney hopes that the Lakers will be just as successful this year, if not, even more successful.

“I hope to repeat as district champions and even capture a regional crown.”

The Lakers have what it takes to do big things this season, as long as they can stay healthy and work well as a team, they should have another great season.
